"You are so heavenly minded that you are of no earthly good!"
As a babe in Christ I was chastised with those words very frequently and for good reason too. I had separated myself from this evil world so much that I even stopped listening to the news. I was so immersed in "church life" life that I sometimes spent large parts of my days either reading the Bible or singing gospel songs while trying to shut out the world. My radio was stuck on one gospel station as I refused to "defile" myself with the songs of the world. I also used to take pleasure in singing a little chorus that I learned from my mother - "my young companions fare thee well I will not go with you to hell, I am on my way to Canaan Land, I will not go I will not go with you."
Looking back now, I can safely say that that song is really the anthem for the "heavenly minded who are of no earthly good."
Today I have grown in spiritual and physical years and I am glad that I have been learning to steady my feet on this earth while looking up towards Heaven at the same time because my redemption draws nigh! .
God's purpose is to redeem mankind and He wants to use us to do so, But are we willing to work the earth and help harvest the field of souls? The field is ripe for harvesting but some persons are not comfortable to join in the harvest for various reasons. One of the main reasons is that they are too many "undesireables" and wicked people" out there who must be avoided at all cost.
Are we willing and ready to love and befriend the unloveable? When I say befriend I am not talking about proselytizing. I am talking about being genuine friends to those who are seeking friendship. Make no mistake this is not a calling for everyone as it carries a backlash if one is not fully grounded in Christ! I recently befriended a homosexual youngster and am facing so much fire it is not funny. I never set out to change him or to preach to him. He has been neglected by his family and society at large and I just felt myself being compelled to love and befriend him.
I make mistakes along the way, but I am not programmed to adopt the ways of evil for it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me and so I gladly go through this earth borne by the Holy Spirit. John 3: 8: The wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth, so is everyone that is born of the Spirit
And about that song that I used to love singing... I have altered the lyrics a bit and I now sing it like this: "oh my companions hear me well, are you on your way to hell? I am on my way to Canaan Land wont you turn back and come with me".
