Dancehall entertainer, Marion Hall, more popularly known as Lady Saw, recently made the announcement that she was no longer a servant of sin but had made up her mind to serve the Lord.
Her bold decision has been met with both encouragement and cynicism, This is expected because of the power she wielded as one of dancehall's most visible and slackest female entertainer.
While an entertainment reporter with XNews, a sometimes risque newspaper, I covered many of her shows and even praised her raunchy onstage behaviour. I loved to laugh at her obscene antics as she teased the camera men who were filming her performance. It was a pleasure to write the articles and even assist with the choice of accompanying photographs.
However, it was while writing for XNews in 1997, that the call came for me the leave Babylon. Even now it is inexplicable how the change came, but when I answered the Lord's bidding at a little church in Bull Bay, St Andrew, an immediate change occurred that left me powerless to my own will. I was brought to my knees and spent about an hour crying uncontrollably. I was not crying about anything in particular, just tears that kept flowing and flowing as if in a bid to wash my sin- stained soul. And then I began to utter a new language that I had no control over! Immediately I was filled with the Holy Ghost! I remember my first article just a few weeks after my conversion: "The Gospel is Being Raped", and how it stirred controversy, so much so that I was interviewed on several radio stations. I had to turn down interviews because I realised that they were becoming more and more me-focused.
I have said all of this to say that Marion needs not listen to any voice but the voice of God. The Holy Spirit is very specific about what He wants and He searches the heart of men and calls and equips them in His own timing. The new believer, in a strange way, undergoes a quickening of the spirit man and becomes sensitive to the voice of God. If he stays in tune with the Spirit, he is able to tune out every negative comment or influence and make God the object of his affection. I suspect this is what is happening to Marion Hall. I also believe her pastor was hand-picked by God to guide her through her pilgrim journey and she is going to be used in a mighty way.
And if God wants to use her immediately He will do so!
In all of this, my prayer is that Marion Hall's conversion will serve to fulfill the purposes of God and the desires of her renewed heart.
May the great and Almighty name of Adonai be praised!
